When you decide to start an online business you have to keep in mind that it is a lot like any other business - meaning that there are key elements every business must pay attention to; providing quality products and/or services, building a reputation to be proud of, and making a profit.

Every business should begin with a real business plan. The plan will provide a pathway that you will follow to reach your goals. In reality this type of business plan is called a 'strategic business plan'.

Many people begin creating their plans by evaluating their real goals for the business.  It's sort of like reverse engineering - you know what your goals are so you work backwards trying to establish the smaller steps necessary to get you to those goals.

It is essential that you understand what your own strengths as well as what your weaknesses are. You see, sometimes outsourcing is the wiser way to go. If you are a talented graphics artist but you absolutely suck at writing then you could do all the graphic work yourself while at the same time you are having the content needed written by someone else.

In the end you will save lots of time and time does equal money. When you think about what your time is actually worth you will agree that spending more time than necessary on a task is not the most profitable decision.

Your business plan should include short term goals as well as long term goals. Additionally, you should be prepared to update and or revise your business at least every three months. This will keep you moving in the right direction with your business and you will always have a focus.

When setting your goals you should be realistic and they should be measurable. I suggest that you create goals that are action oriented and not simply based on a dollar sign. If you keep your focus on the required tasks the money will eventually come.
